Not a company,but a cummunity-Tools

The rewarded -software tool that gives the power of rewarding to the employees.
How does it work?
Each quarter every  employee gets a share of the company's revenue (approximately 1000$ per person) that he can distribute  as bonus between all other employees but himself according to the employees contribution to the company.
The advantages:
The advantages of the system are it takes the "power" of deciding who gets the bonus money from the management  ,that usually keeps the money to their close circles. Furthermore  this system can stick out contributing employees that usually are not recognized by management because they are modest,  quiet and don't like to be noted and so forth
The disadvantage is that people can take advantage of the system and choose to give the reward to the friends and so forth. Because of the annual performance review at  the company  and sometimes not objectively review and can cause some interpersonal conflicts.

The love machine-
Linden Lab chairmen and founder create a tool to improve the workplace environment and to reduce fear and bad "KARMA" from employees, he called it "The Love Machine".
This tool is a web page that lets Linden's employees the option to send appreciation messages to colleagues. For an example, if you see that an employee did a good job in a subject that important to the your company, you click on "The Love Machine", write him a quick thank-you and send. Now he feels good, because your appreciation for his job, and you feel good because you spread your love. The idea is to spread appreciation and love into the corporate and give  the employees confident and self estimate, in the additional it makes people happy when they spread their own love.
At Linden corporate there are 300 workers that 25% of them use the "Love Machine", therefore, there are 300 massages in Linden's net every day and everybody  can see them flow, it makes good environment and collaboration at the company. This cumulative affect, washes away the cynicism and the insecurity that every day exists in most of the workplaces today, and give the employees feeling of appreciation. This tool, especially important this days, when most of the work is done on the internet and almost impossible to notice, therefore it's hard to get gratification. The "Love Machine" give  people the gratitude they need and empower them, which is a big advantage to the corporation.
Advantages:

1. It gives the people in the company the opportunity to spread their love

2. When people get gratitude on their job they get motivated.

3. This tool gives the chance to say thank-you to the employee that actually did the hard work.

4. It makes a good environment in the company

5. It can make good competition among employees

Disadvantages:
1. It can waste an important working time.

2. Workers can send love to their friend and not according the good job they  have done.

3. It can make workers jealous of each other and be over-competitive.

How does Linden Lab make money?

The profit model of Linden Lab is to sell/rent digital real estate in the "second life" world.

It is so powerful because they can create a boundless land ,and if there will be demand for the land they will keep selling it. second life actually has it's own economy.it has it 's own money that is magnet for currency speculators and real estate marketers. Second life money is easily cashed out to real world dollars.

Another tool of Linden Leb:

In it’s first year as a start-up ,instead of assigning engineers to work on specific project, Linden let them chose their work from a vast of database of tasks .that's how the "A&Os" got created."A&Os" is a reporting tool where the employees share the achievements and objectives with all other employees ,in the tool they mention what they have accomplished this week and what is their work for the upcoming week. The advantage of this tool is that the employees will arrange automatically in organic teams with shared intrests, that way the pressure to perform comes out not from the bosses, but from peers-a far more powerful group of motivators. This method had a rule that she will exsit only when the results are accountable.by creating this tool that everybody share there tasks, and by the transparently of the tool with comments of the employees  on other employees tasks Lindon yokes the collective wisdom into the entire organization.

  1. (a) Can you suggest an application based on one of the tools above for enhancing class community.

I think that if we wish to enhance the class community we should keep all the class members in contact during the whole week, and not only on Mondays.
After reading the article and learning about the "Love Machine" and the "Rewarder", I had an idea that utilizes the principles of both tools and creates one tool that will (1)keep us all in touch (2)give each student an incentive to contribute to the course (3)appreciate efforts.
The idea is to build a webpage, where a public chat is available to everybody to talk together and suggest interesting articles, funny YouTube videos, amusing pictures, jokes, perhaps also to exchange goods like clothes, books etc. Another thing, we can take pictures on our phone during the breaks on Mondays and post them there. This will keep us in touch.
Besides the chat, each one of us getting points every week, right? So instead gain points to ourselves, we will receive an amount of points that we can divide them as we want to other students (except for us). Each amount of points that we give to someone, we need to write adjacent to it the reasons why he got your points and what was his contributions this week, which achieved him your points. In addition, the total weekly points that student gets from others is limited (so that the points will be scattered among all those who deserves).
Eventually, everything is transparent and we can see under each student's name the points he had got and the reasons.
This tool provides appreciation to people who work hard, and at the same time it motivates other students to put more efforts and contribute, because the student's final grade will be partially composed of the weekly grades, which consist of the points he received from his classmates.

How can we enhance good values in our community?

In the tutorial, every 2 weeks, we could create a new space to contribute in every team project and also to the whole community. Like the “rewarder” tool, all the members of each team could share out 10 points among their workmates. The idea is to highlight a team member of the group who had contributed in a hard and effort way. The member with the highest score (in addition all the score he/she had received) in every team could receive credit points bonus. Also when we are going to share out the points we can accompany a reason with “grateful and value letters”, and then the letters can be exposed to the entire community to assess the values recognized inside every team. In this way everyone could appreciate the values of every good worker and learn about them.

How can we create not a class, but a community?

    By adopting each other.

My suggestion is that each group will adopt a different group.
The adopting group will advise and accompany its adopted group throughout the project.
In addition, every two weeks there will be an evaluation for each group. ("Rewarder")

I think it will result in not only caring and more pleasant environment, but also will produce optimal tools to help us and our community.

  4. c) Evaluate Linden’s lab business model based on the Triple Bottom Line criteria.

Does a good employee treatment mean that Linden Lab’s business model follows honorable values?
No, Linden Lab is still a company focused on profits.

In order to evaluate whether Linden Lab conforms to the Triple Bottom Line criteria (People, Planet, Profit), I am going to discuss its business model from social, ecological and economic perspectives.

For the social part, we already know about the excellent tools Love Machine, Rewarder and A&O which create a community out of a company. As people get feedback on their performance and stay in contact with colleagues, they feel more responsibility, loyalty and labor security towards the workplace.
The idea of connecting people is also the basis for the whole Second Life program. Customers from all over the world share cultural specialties and build their own world together. I believe that this cooperative behavior will be reflected in real life. Nevertheless, the risk of losing oneself in the virtual world and resigning from the job in reality cannot be evaluated positively.

Concerning the ecological aspects, you can bring the argument that no real material is wasted to create new products and buildings. Therefore, Second Life is used by many companies to simulate their business models and try new ideas in a virtual environment first (e.g. products, architecture, research on customers’ behavior). In addition, Second Life organized an event called “Virtual Worlds as Green Workplaces” during the 15th climate summit in Kopenhagen. Greenpeace is also present in Second Life. From my point of view, there is a great potential for such NGOs to work with users on topics of sustainability.

Let’s talk about the profits, now: Of course, Linden Lab tries to make as much money as possible. This is why they realize the so called “freemium offer” i.e. free and premium accounts. Most of the revenues are generated through the virtual marketplace and the fact that the digital currency Linden Dollar can be changed into real dollars. This high impact on real life is also expressed in people and companies selling virtual products and services to users. In this way, enterprises earn money and improve their public relations.

To sum up, I think that Linden Lab’s business model can be positively evaluated considering ecological potentials and mostly community building possibilities. Though the working structure is really exemplary, the company is profit-oriented in the first place.

For each group, each member of the class will Suggest constructive criticism/idea in order to help them to improve their project.
Each week, the student who gave the advice/idea that can be the most useful to the group- will be rewarded.
Each group will decide on one idea at least - from all the students' ideas -and be committed to it.

In this way, all students will be motivated to help the other groups and each group will receive the assistance of the brainstorming of all the students in the class.
The application will enhance the creativity of each group and use the great "wisdom of crowds" principle as well.

In my opinion, what distinguishes community and society is mutual support and help.

The idea sounds great and gives incentives to work with the other groups. However, I believe that it is too much focused on creativity. In this way, only the most creative people or those with the largest horizons will be rewarded all the time whereas other skills will be put into the background.

My suggestion is that each participant will find a group he could help her in cases that this group needs help
This is actually the idea proposed in cases in which the group has quite a good idea but they lack a certain ability to achieve the ultimate goal.
If a member finds such a group he could help - this group will be assist on the members project as well.
This way both sides will benefit - the assisted team can achieve its ultimate goal in the project and the team that her member spent time in helping the other group will get support and help from the 2nd group and in fact gets more opinions and ideas from this group.

Alternatively - the assisted group can send public "love notes" within the community and share the good deeds performed by a member of the team that helps them - that will praise him publicly and raise the morale of the community.

For example if you need a specify contact you can ask in this space if someone knows a person and if he can help us to start the connection. Another way to achieve this goal could be in our blog creating an online “Supporting teams”.

  9. (a) Can you suggest an application based on one of the tools above for enhancing class community.

Can a class created of individuals become a community?
One of the definitions of the word community in the dictionary is: "an interacting population of various kinds of individuals in a common location" (Britannica).
I understand from this definition that in order to become a community we should start by interacting more amongst ourselves. Therefore, I suggest we increase the amount of time each member of the class is heard during our weekly lesson by creating short class discussions.
The idea is as follows: each week the teacher, the teaching team or one of the students will raise a question or suggest a subject regarding the connection of SV to our everyday lives, and for 5-10 minutes the entire class will participate in a discussion about that subject. At the end of the discussion the person who raised the question will decide and announce who best contributed to the discussion, as a way similar to "The Love Machine" tool.
By doing that, I believe that each student could feel more connected to the class by hearing its members' opinions and stories, and will also feel more accepted and needed once he/she will get the opportunities to be heard. After all, the idea of a community is having this connection and feeling of acceptance among its members, so there is no reason why we couldn't become one.

The Love Machine in our course's community:
Perhaps we can adapt this tool into our community through our course's Google Site. Just as we do with apologies, we can have a page devoted to individual comments, but in this case: only positive feedback is allowed!
Students will be able to comment on something that happened in class, or between classes. They can compliment a certain committee on a job-well-done, or admire the work of a team which presented something. It can even be an individual "like" on something a student said in class.

Just like in Linden Lab, we will most likely notice the great affect that positive feedback can bring. In our everyday lives we tend to easily criticize things around us, though we rarely stop to say a good word...

What actions can we take in order to become a community in class?
My idea is relatively close to that of Ronit. In my opinion, we should allow the students share their valuable knowledge with the class. The subjects that should be raised are:

    1) Job networking and interviews experience.
    2) Technion facilities and services that are beneficial to students.
    3) Useful tips in a search for a car/apartment.

By helping each other in the class we can make a more personal interaction with other students that we haven't socialized yet. In addition, we can use the 'rewarder' tool to give appropriate gratitude to students in the community that gave helpful tips!
After the student presents his/her idea the class can rank this tip with a individual evaluation. Students who get a high ranked tip can feel the gratitude from the class and maybe receive some kind of small reward. This reward can be class credit or anything else that can enhance the student's personal feeling of contribution.
We should have at least two or three students present their tips in each class session. This can supply a pause from the regular activities and give some insight on relevant everyday issues that students experience.

BUT from my point of view, this information should be provided on the internet and not in class, shouldn't it?
On the internet, you can find even more tips from even more than 30 students. Maybe, we could continue to exchange sources of information instead of only presenting our own experiences...

I agree that the internet obtains much more information. Nevertheless, hearing some personal experiences from fellow students who are at a similar stage of life as you are holds a high value. A Help Forum.

Teams can post questions directed to the community so that they can get feedback on their ongoing projects, which will make the process even more like a lean start-up because the feedback will be continuous and not only ones in a couple of weeks.
The Help Forum can even be a place to get tips on how to make our ideas the most applicable so it will address the target community in the best way. Moreover, teams can seek help in the technical side to make our projects more professional
It can easily enough be implemented in our SV forum.
A little like the "A&Os" it will help our community to share the achievements and objectives by helping others help themselves and others.

---Create a webpage maybe named “Helper & Helpee” where classmates could ask for or offer help and the student who gets help can press the button “Appreciation” to express his gratitude.

    1. Spread help like “The Love Machine” spreading love. In my opinion, to generalize the “Love Machine” model, any tool that can prompt the positive communication between members should be useful for the development of a community. In our class, students may need help when doing projects, making friends with local students and so forth. So I think we can build such a webpage to ask for or offer help. On one part of this webpage, someone who wants to offer help can post which help he or she can offer. For example, someone can post he can help to build a website if he is good at. On the one part of this webpage, someone in need can look for help.
    2. Expressing your gratitude. If someone get help or just appreciate others’ behavior of offering help actively without asking for, he can press the button “Appreciation” which is similar to the “Like” button on Facebook to express appreciation.
    3. Every help entails the appreciation, even a little help. So there is no ranking that who offers the most help, etc. And helps can be rewarded by others’ appreciation, which maybe more significant for them.

I have encountered some students including myself who didn't have an idea to a make up task. If students were to write what interests them, what they would like to hear more about of the things related to what we learn in class- then we will be able to contribute valueable knowledge to the class. Moreover, students will be able to team up to do the make up task based on the shared interests. It will contribute to the sense of community in the class.

My idea: A new "misc." label at the course website.

It's noticeable that we tend to give higher weight and attention to things we can relate to, or that are a part of our world of interests. I suggest forming a vast alternative platform of ideas or applications managed by the class community that would provide a more 'open' type of tasks.
Each week every member of the course community will share a new post in which he will describe an item regarding whatever comes into his mind, starting from a good useful webpage or an interesting book review, to a general skill he thinks could benefit the class in some way. That way, one can expand his horizons actively by taking a pause from academics. Anyone can give a "LIKE" to the ideas that touched his heart, and through that generate the Love Machine tool.
The community member that would receive the highest "LIKE" rank for his weekly post would present it at the next class session and be rewarded with credit.
That way, the good ideas and useful information won't be lost in the mix of other text posts and reviews, the visual weekly presentation would be more effective and everyone will get the chance to share their interests.

How can we make grades transparency in our class even better?

The tools described at the article are making emphasis on transparency and designed to cause the employee to draw better performance.

We are get graded each week for our performances and our comments, but we don’t really know how the grade is given and don’t have the chance to improve ourselves. In my opinion each student should receive a verbal feedback about his or her performances. For example,in the case of comments, it could be very helpful to know according what criteria the grades are given and in case of getting partial grade one should know what wasn't enough or wrong with his comment. This provides constructive criticism which can help the student to learn and improve for the next time. In this way we can share our knowledge with each other, get better from week to week and improve the quality of our comments. For this matter we can use our course site, where we can place criteria table which explains what criteria was filled by the student and which wasn't. Referee team can fill this table every week!
P.S We can also make something similar for summaries posted on the blog, by giving constructive criticism on the summery itself and improve our writing skill by this way!

I read about the "love machine" tool and found this useful site:

    http://sendlove.us/trial/

It's called "send love", it's an employee recognition system designed to help organizations measure individual employee contribution through peer feedback- much like the love machine tool.

All you have to do is register your team or company, add all your team members, and they can use the site to send short “love” messages recognizing each other for the good work they’ve performed. The messages are transparent to the whole company, and at the end of each period you can review the results and use the data to evaluate the members.

Since you could join the site for a free 30 day trial version, I thought we could set up a group for our community at "send love" and have a trial run. During this month anyone can send love messages to other members who've contributed the community in some way. In this way we can test whether the "love machine" can really make a difference.

There is an easy to use, highly graphic tool called: GOOGLE FORMS, we can create a poll which will be filled in a certain week and present the results in the week that follows.
you can see a graph of everybody's choices and save the form so its easy to edit each new week, and we can share it on google+ so everyone can follow.

They enable this by offering profit sharing, or stock options, or bonuses tied to performance. That way, if the company does well, all employees share in the success.

In order to create a sense of loyalty and strong bond between the groups I suggest each person "invest" stocks in one other group's project. This way his success is yours and you are more likely to give them advice and assist them in their project.
